Cartagena - the Pearl of the Caribbean

Cartagena is strategically located in the northern part of Colombia along the Caribbean coast. History meets modernity: the well-preserved historic center is surrounded by a massive fortress wall and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next to it, the skyline glimmers, reminiscent of Miami.

From the trendy neighborhood of Getsemaní, we explore the old town. It is characterized by narrow streets lined with beautiful houses in Spanish colonial style.The rainy season has definitely passed, and we enjoy the summery climate of the city.Everything is very colorful, there are many street vendors, green plazas, and plenty to see!

The neighboring district of Getsemaní is known for its abundant street art, colorful houses, and long nights. We spend the night here and let ourselves be swept along. In Bar Street, we indulge in delicious cocktails in the evening.

Cartagena was founded by the Spaniards at the beginning of the colonization of South America in the 16th century and served as their most important hub: gold, silver, and gemstones were shipped to Spain. The slave trade from Africa to Central and South America also passed through this city. Today, the largest part of the population is of African descent.

The numerous riches made Cartagena a target for heavy pirate attacks (e.g., by Francis Drake). At the end of the 16th century, the massive, 11 km long city wall was built with the help of slaves. The enormous Fort San Felipe also dates from this time!

Cartagena also has several city beaches, which we skip because they are said to be very crowded and the water is polluted there.

And we continue into the mountainous interior of Colombia: The notorious but now very charming city of Medellín is already waiting for us.
