We are not stopping in Bellingen by chance, as the subtropical and temperate rainforests of Dorrigo National Park are located just 28 km from here. This was our main destination today! After a half-hour drive through winding roads, we arrived at the visitor center of the national park under sunshine and 21°C. We had again ascended to higher altitudes, slightly over 700m. The info center provided tips for the 6.6 km long trail. One could have also geared up there and stocked up on food, stuffed animals, etc. The centers are always well-equipped, and parents with small children always need strong nerves not to overspend their daily budget here. We are always impressed by the friendly willingness of the staff on site to help. We were warned to be cautious of one plant, as it has thorns about 5mm long on the leaves, which can cause skin irritation upon contact. We set off on the Wonga Walk through the rainforest. On the circular trail, which is almost completely paved, we saw many enormous trees and tangled underbrush. Palms and ferns, which we have in miniature as houseplants, were thriving here in XXl. The snake and the lizard were of course made of metal. There was chirping everywhere, but well-hidden. If you book guided tours in the evening, you might also see tree kangaroos and other nocturnal animals. However, it is advised to avoid driving here at night, i.e., after 6 PM, as accidents with crossing animals often occur. We passed by two magnificent waterfalls and there were viewing platforms again and again. 200 meters of elevation had to be overcome. But that was no problem on such a wonderful trail and with plenty of shade. A particular feature in the rainforest was the massive tall Red Cedars. These were still cut down for processing around 1900. But that is long history now. This rainforest belongs to the Gondwana rainforests, which are protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. After nearly three hours, we returned to the parking lot. On the way, we repeatedly encountered other hikers, a good sign of interest in nature. The sun had climbed well and was heading towards 30 °C. We decided to take a short stroll through Bellingen. The town resembles an old western town and serves as a tourist center. We found a good lunch and replenished our supplies, as breakfast is not always included with our accommodations. A kettle, tea, instant coffee, refrigerator, and some still drinking water are in the room. There is even a microwave and dishes available here. Today we refueled our Mitsubishi for the second time, which was equivalent to €1.39 per liter! Finally, something is cheaper than in Germany, as life here is otherwise more expensive. We spent the rest of the day 'on holiday', planning the onward journey for tomorrow, rearranging the luggage, sorting pictures, writing, and listening to the cicadas.
