Small wine villages & the Verdon Gorge

Published: 10.09.2021

Our accommodation in the mountain village of Flayosc is a dream. The hosts are so nice and take care of us lovingly. They have given us so many great tips for the region. Every morning when I wake up and take a walk with Littlefoot to the bakery, I love inhaling the scent of the pine trees. Simply fantastic.

Last night, wild boars were on the property and caused a lot of damage. The boars have been coming more and more often lately and looking for food :-(! Princess Maxima, that's the little guard dog of our owners, usually barks when the wild boars are on the property. Princess Littlefoot didn't notice anything about all this. She was fast asleep in her bed :-)))))!

Yesterday we first visited the small wine village of Thoronet. Daniela stocked up on wine here :-)! I don't drink wine myself, but judging by the appearance of the bottles, it must taste very good :-)! From Thoronet we went to Sillans. Here we visited a super beautiful waterfall. I was impressed because I had only seen such waterfalls in Asia or South America before. Not bad, the French :-)! The next destination was Salernes. I drove and I love cruising through the narrow lanes. Driving outside the towns between the olive groves and vineyards is a dream for me. Daniela always gets scared in the curves :-)! Oh, everything has been going well so far - positive thinking!!! In Salernes, we were starving, but everything was closed except for a small bistro. We were told that the French only eat from 7:00 pm onwards. OMG, I got in a bad mood, I wanted to eat and I wanted it immediately. Luckily, the bistro had some tapas which we ordered and also had ice cream for dessert :-)!

Afterwards, we returned to our accommodation and went for a little swim in the pool :-) and ended the evening with a glass of wine and water.

Today the highlight was on the agenda, namely the Verdon Gorge (also called Grand Canyon du Vermond and is one of the largest canyons in Europe)! The drive there was again impressive. Again and again, vineyards or olive groves on the right and left alternated, as well as the picturesque mountain villages we drove through. You really have to be careful not to crash somewhere if you look at things while driving :-)! Our first stop was the Lac de Sainte-Croix reservoir. Littlefoot took a long bath here and freed the lake from small branches. After that, we went to a bridge. From there, we could look into the gorge and see the river, which had an amazing color. There was a sign on the bridge :-). I have attached a photo. Next, we went to the Tour de Cretes. Hmmm, I made a mistake here and our host said we should drive it clockwise. I said to Daniela, WHY? If we drive it the other way around, it's a bit shorter :-). Done! We drove it counter-clockwise. The viewpoints where you could stop were super beautiful and the view down into the canyons was magnificent. At some point halfway, there was a sign on the right. For me, it said, buses have to turn around and then there were two more signs prohibiting entry! But not for me, only for buses (so I interpreted...). So I drove about 100 meters further and then a motorhome came towards us with a driver waving wildly. I had to turn around :-(.... oops, the sign was not only for buses but also for all traffic participants :-)))). Now I also knew why you should only drive the road in one direction. We had to drive the entire way back and then went to the last great viewpoint and took some great photos of the canyons here.

Now we were starving and drove back to our village. It was 6:00 pm and what can I say, restaurants only serve food from 7:30 pm onwards.... cry, sniff. Off to the Spar and bought everything to satisfy our hunger :-)! How can one only eat so late???
