Today we went to the North Island to Wellington. It took us almost 3 hours from Upper Motuere to the ferry to Picton. When we arrived there, the port was being evacuated. They told us why, but once again we didn't understand Kiwi English. We think there was a fuel spill from a truck on the ferry, so they evacuated everything as a safety precaution. Fortunately, the blockade was quickly lifted. However, our ferry was delayed for almost 2 hours (3 hours 20 minutes crossing in tolerable sea conditions). We didn't arrive in Wellington until around 8:00 PM.
We dropped off our rental car in Picton and got a new one in Wellington (another RAV4, but with a higher specification).
Our hotel, the 'CQ Hotel', is located on Wellington's main entertainment street, Cuba Street. So it was still quite easy to find something to eat and soak up some atmosphere at night. Observation: The ladies here seem to have a different temperature perception. While we were wearing thick jackets at 10 degrees, the girls were showing off their midriffs and wearing spaghetti straps. That takes motivation...
