Around the Rigi

Published: 22.02.2025

Bike tour
Rigi → Rigi
135 km

My training tour today took me around the Rigi, which I see every day from home. Admittedly, with a length of 135 kilometers, it was a big challenge. As far as I can remember, there was only one stage that was longer on my previous trips. However, my already planned starting stage is 120 kilometers long. It takes me from Basel to Elsau in Alsace. However, there are almost no elevation meters that I need to climb. Today, there were more than 1,000, so I can say I feel fit enough at the moment to complete my Baltic tour.

Just a quick note about the knees. I once tried to calculate how often a knee has to bend on a tour like this. With the highest gear, it's 13 times every 100 meters on flat terrain. This results in 130 times for every 1,000 meters. So for 135 kilometers, that's a total of 17,500 squats for both knees. However, the advantage is that not the entire body weight bears down on the knee, which would actually correspond to the same number of squats.

Today's training route took me to the Rigi, which I see every day from home. It's true that with a length of 135 kilometers, it was a big challenge. As far as I remember, in my previous travels, there was only one stage that was longer. But my planned starting stage already has a length of 120 kilometers. It takes me from Basel to Elsau in Alsace. However, there is practically no elevation to climb. Today, there were over 1,000. So I can say that I currently feel fit enough to complete my Baltic tour.

Just a quick note on the knees. I once tried to calculate how often you have to bend a knee on a tour like this. With the highest gear, it's 13 times every 100 meters on flat ground. That means 130 times per 1,000 meters. So over 135 kilometers, that's a total of 17,500 squats for both knees. However, there is the advantage that not all of the body weight puts strain on the knee, which would actually correspond to the same number of squats.

Another small comment on the knees. I tried to calculate how often a knee has to bend on a tour like this. With the highest gear, it is 13 times per 100 meters on flat terrain. That works out to 130 times per 1,000 meters. So for 135 kilometers, a total of 17,500 squats for both knees. However, with the advantage that not the entire body weight is placed on the knee, which would actually correspond to the same number of squats.
