27/04/2019 - from Brunei to Sukau

Published: 30.04.2019

The stay in Brunei came to an exciting end. At 7:30 a.m. at the airport, all our aerosol sprays were confiscated, even from the suitcase, as they are flammable. Ben had his mini pocket knife, which has been through thousands of flights, taken away at the hand luggage control, and then our hand luggage was explicitly weighed. Of course, it was too heavy. So we hung and tied all sorts of things to our bodies to be able to board the plane. After a 45-minute flight, we had a 3-hour layover at Kota Kinabalu airport and then we continued, another 50 minutes with the next plane to Sandakan. That is located in Malaysia in the Sabah region on Borneo. We were picked up by the family of our next homestay and drove for 2.5 hours through the countryside. Small villages with colorful wooden houses on the left and right and lots of palm trees. Plantations were everywhere, which serve for palm oil production, but are also responsible for deforestation of the rainforest. We landed in the middle of a very nice Malaysian family who lives on the Kinabatangan River. The Sukau River Homestay is a properly decorated house where about 10 family members and now we live in three small guest rooms. After a very delicious dinner, we went on a night boat ride. We saw various monkeys, several civets, two crocodiles, an owl, a sleeping kingfisher, countless fireflies, and stars.
