I chose the place Padang Bai solely because of the German diving school Water Worxx, to do my Open Water Diver there.
When I arrived in Padang Bai, it was a real change, because unlike the calm Amed, there is a lot going on in Padang Bai. This is probably due to the fact that one of the most important ports can be found in Padang Bai. From there you can go to Lombok, the Gilis and Nusa Penida. And although there are very cheap ferries from there, there are speedboat providers one after the other, so if you are near the harbor, you will be asked every few seconds if you want to go to the Gilis or to Lombok. Since my diving school was also right at the harbor, I was constantly approached asking if I wanted to take a 'cheap' trip to the Gilis. That was sometimes really annoying. It should be mentioned that the ferry is 10 times cheaper and therefore much more suitable, as long as you have some time.
I stayed in Padang Bai for 4 nights and did my OWD within 3 days.
During these 3 days, when I learned the first important diving steps, I experienced a wonderful and colorful underwater world. The corals and fish that you usually only see in documentaries exerted a little magical attraction on me and I really enjoyed observing them over and over again. A small highlight was my last dive in the sea. We dived to a wreck (at a depth of 20 meters), in which many very colorful and different fish lived. A huge moray eel also lived in the wreck, which fascinated me, but I also kept a respectful distance. On the way back we even saw a cute little blue-spotted stingray swimming past us.
After the dives, I was often quite exhausted and just relaxed on the beach. I particularly liked the Blue Lagoon Beach and the White Sand Beach in Padang Bai.
Naturally, I also met many wonderful people in Padang Bai. The two long evenings with Iris and Daniel (South Tyroleans) were particularly nice, when we had hours-long conversations and ate great food.
