October 5th. After a two-hour drive, we reach the bustling metropolis of LA. You can easily drive from west to east for 2.5 hours on the highway through the city and its suburbs. We stop at Universal Studios, it's something you have to see at some point, we say to ourselves. The $260 admission for two! ruins a large family if you also consider all the souvenirs and food... The one-hour studio tour itself is interesting but a bit dated. They are trying to counteract this with two new attractions, "Kong" and "Fast and Furious". What we like the most by far is Harry Potter World. Both the ride and the village with the castle are really well done. All the other rides also have that certain something that sets them apart from regular roller coasters or attractions. It is mostly the visual effects (what else) that convince with 3D glasses. Plus, it has everything for everyone, from young to old and for all levels of expected nausea. ;)
We have dinner at a Chinese restaurant and before we embark on a long journey out of the city, we drive up Mulholland Drive (as a fan of David Lynch movies, I think that's great). At the top, you would have a magnificent view of all of LA from the viewpoint. Unfortunately, the platform is closed, but we do see the only coyote up close on our trip. The next campsite outside of houses is closed, so we once again spend the night on the side of a dead-end road.
