We decide to skip Morelia after so much city and culture and head directly into nature.
Every winter, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the Santuario Mariposa Biosphere Reserve from the northern regions of the USA and Canada to hibernate.
At night, they hang in huge clusters on the trees and descend to the cool forest floor as the midday heat sets in.
We arrive there in the evening and find a spot in an abandoned glade. Since the reserve is located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, a cool night is to be expected.
So what could be more fitting than having a proper dinner at an altitude comparable to a ski lodge in Central Europe in February? The original Swiss cheese found in the well-stocked supermarket in the afternoon also tastes excellent.
I have to go to see the butterflies alone, as dogs are not allowed and we don't want to leave Naima alone in the car.
The experience with the butterflies is intense and definitely worth the effort.
