When you say cheese, you mean Gouda! That's what it says in the brochure, and there's some truth to it. It's a somehow special feeling to be in the cheese capital - and it's not in Switzerland! But Gouda cheese is really top class. Today we extensively tasted at 't Kaaswinkeltje and had a few pieces that we particularly enjoyed packed up. 't Kaaswinkeltje, by the way, is the oldest cheese shop in the Gouda city center and specializes in farmhouse cheese made from raw milk on farms in the surrounding area. Simply delicious!
But first, we took a look at the old town, with the old town hall, the market square, and the Goudse Waag. And because it's fall, there was of course a fair. With all the hustle and bustle and screaming.
The absolute highlight at the moment, however, is the Sint-Janskerk. You can still climb the roof until October 1st and enjoy a breathtaking view from above of the city of Gouda and its surroundings. This is possible as part of the 750th anniversary celebrations of the granting of city rights. The Sint-Janskerk is not the tallest church, but at 123 meters it is the longest church in the Netherlands. And when else do you have the opportunity to climb on top of a church?
A big thank you to the "gem" at the tourist information office who gave us the tip and advised us so kindly!
