Mérida

Arriving in Mérida at 7 o'clock in the morning, the four of us were able to take a taxi directly to the hotel, where we were greeted with breakfast.

At 9 o'clock, we joined a free tour, which we found rather uninteresting, so we decided to explore on our own. There was a huge market where we could spend hours. In the afternoon, we spent time by the pool in the hammocks.

In the evening, we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant and went to a bar to drink margaritas. Later, there was a reenactment of Maya ball game, which used to involve sacrificing the loser. After that, we went to another bar, which was quite difficult to find a place for the ten of us. Nevertheless, we managed to find a spot. However, we didn't stay for long as most of us were tired after the night bus.

The next morning, the three of us went to a nearby cenote. Before that, I finally got the chance to buy a new bathing suit. To get to the cenote, we had to descend a narrow staircase that led to a small cave. The water was sometimes waist-deep and sometimes estimated to be 3-4 meters deep. A man lent us his diving mask for a moment, and we could see that it extended even further into the ground, with only darkness visible.

On the way back, we passed through a town with a large cathedral, which was closed on our way there but open now. So we quickly went inside, where we were greeted by the "guardian" who asked if we would like to go up to the roof. A narrow spiral staircase led us up. At the top, we enjoyed the beautiful view and watched the sunset.

The next day, after check out and breakfast, we took a bus to Celestún, where we took a boat tour to see the flamingos living there. The boat tour was supposed to last 2.5 hours, but we were back after 1.5 hours. When we complained, they responded with indifference and no one wanted to take responsibility. After 15 minutes, we gave up and went back. Along the way, we found out that all the buses to Valladolid were already sold out, so we tried to find colectivos (small minibusses for about 14 people), but they were also full. In the end, we fortunately found the bus terminal for cheaper companies that still had space for us, although the journey took much longer. Exhausted and worn out, we finally made it to our hostel.
