Sleep one more time …..

ޝާއިޢުކޮށްފައިވެއެވެ: 12.09.2023

….. and then 7 weeks are over. Pack your bags one last time, today we're going to Halifax. But first we go to New Germany.

The village of New Germany

Facts

A small village on the LaHave River with about 450 residents. New Germany was founded by German immigrants in the 18th century who came to the country as so-called foreign Protestants. In the 2021 census, 135 residents in New Germany described themselves as being of German descent.

The village looks like every village here. Nothing typically German. Well now the question arises, what is typically German? Is the architectural style typical of the Black Forest or more typical of the coast? A restaurant with a German name and German food, is that typical? I might have expected a bakery with German bread and rolls, because that's what everyone likes to eat - at least that's what they say. But none of that, not even a town sign.

We continue to Lunenberg.

In the travel guides you can always see the picture of the skyline with the colorful houses at the harbor. Actually I just want to go there because of the photo.

Facts

Lunenburg is a small port town and is Canada's oldest German settlement with a long fishing and shipbuilding tradition. The city center with its striking wooden architecture - colorful idyllic houses. Lunenburg has 2,400 residents.

Lunenburg was founded in 1753, when the place already belonged to the British Empire. Initially it was settled by “foreign” Protestants, most of whom came from the Palatinate and Württemberg in Germany and Switzerland. They were brought to the still young Canada by Lord Cornwalls, who promised them free practice of religion and free ownership of land and also financed the passage. Later, when almost exclusively Germans came to Lunenburg, the original name of the Mic-Mac Indians Mirliguèche was changed to its current name.

A pretty small town with lots of colorful houses. We would have liked to visit the local brewery, but no beer before 12:00. 😩😩.

So we look around a bit and then make our way to Peggy's Cove. A trip along small bays with houses in a fantastic location.

A great road - no, I don't mean that, because the roads are usually not great, more like tar.

but a great landscape. We can already see the landmark from the distance.

Facts

Peggy's Cove was founded in 1811 by six families of German descent. However, the bay's first recorded name was as early as 1766 as Eastern Point Harbor or Peggs Harbor. The small fishing village is now home to 30 residents who live in the town all year round.

A wonderful piece of earth, without all the people it would be even more wonderful.

But we make the best of it. And you don't even think how small the world can be. We meet the couple from Toronto again who went kayaking with us on the North River. A short chat and the exchange of WhatsApp contacts (since they are coming to Germany in November) and then we part ways again.

We climb the rocks a bit more and then head to the last accommodation of our trip,

Halifax

the Hampton Inn by Hilton in downtown Halifax. Centrally located with 2 queen beds. Great, a bed all alone for the last night. Without someone hitting the ceiling and getting on my skin. I can turn and turn however I want. But we don't want to sleep yet.

At the harbor

One item is still missing from our to-do list. Eating lobster - in the land of the lobster. TripAdvisor recommends the Bluenose II - but it's almost empty, which is never a good sign, so we choose Saltys. A table right by the water, a glass of wine,

Shahaatz blissfully next to me and……

a young gull that constantly calls to its mother and wants food, but the mother thinks: You're already big enough, find something for yourself. But young gulls are just as ignorant as children - they continue to call. I think “someone please put the animal out of its suffering” but no one can be found.

Eating lobster is a challenge if you rarely do it. So that we don't look completely stupid, we decide to get some quick information from YouTube beforehand. Also, what do you need this little spoon for? The nutcracker is clearly designed to crack open scissors. But that spoon? After the video we are prepared, the 🦞 can come.

Mmmm delicious 😋 it was and we dismantled the animal with dignity and without any accidents.

We decide to stroll around the waterfront for a bit

and stop at a cocktail bar.

Our waiter Isam is very helpful and even worries us,

after he knows that we are German, her new German service assistant comes to the table so that we can chat in German. Nando, a young man from Munich, who now wants to live here in Canada for a year after graduating from high school. So he came here with his parents and has been working in the bar for a short time. (A service assistant is not yet entitled to tips). After a little chat we wish him all the best and enjoy the cocktails.

After a Caipirinha and a Pinagroni

we move on to the next pub.

Halifax is very mountainous and since our hotel is at the top of the mountain and the harbor is at the bottom, we decide to climb the mountain again by meandering. If you don't know the term - please let us know. 🙋‍♀️ I didn't know him. Run in serpentines. And unfortunately we pass one or two pubs.

The way home will not only be wet inside, but also outside.

Hopefully the crappy weather will be gone again tomorrow.
