Impressions of Kampala

We traveled on to the capital. The first thing that strikes you is the traffic. Cars and Boda Bodas crisscross everywhere. The motorcycles squeeze through during traffic jams wherever possible. Traffic light phases last significantly longer than back home. It feels like an eternity. In the evening, we were stuck in a traffic jam for 1.5 hours and moved only millimeters ahead. Before that, nothing was moving, and we got out to walk faster.

At a craft market, we looked for souvenirs. The friendly "Hello, how are you? Feel free to look in my shop." quickly wore on us. We bought a few things and then went on our search. Our goal was to find something related to a warthog, to gift it to Reuben. He sometimes refers to himself that way, as he is everything and a lot. So, we went into attack mode. Into the shop and declared our quest. A picture of a Pumba, or a postcard, or a keychain. Suddenly, all the sellers became a bit frantically active. Do we have something like that? What exactly is a warthog? Aren't there prettier animals? We moved from shop to shop, and word spread that there were some strange customers. It was so much more fun. 😉 But we found nothing.

Next, we went to the Kazubi Tombs. A world heritage site with the largest grass-roofed hut in the world. Unfortunately, it was a reconstruction since it burned down 10 years ago. Still impressive. Four kings of Buganda are buried here. The first had this built as a palace. But he died two years after moving in. Also impressive was that he had 84 wives. One for each of the 56 clans.
