Thursday, 25 July 2019 – Day 5
Today is Vatican Day. But first we stop at the Pyramid of Cestius , the Piramide di Caio Cestio.
Important in Rome if you're still writing postcards to those at home: Don't let the card stands talk you into buying yellow stamps. There are only a few mailboxes from this obviously alternative provider, but here at the pyramid there is a yellow mailbox!
We got a priority ticket for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel so that we could get in straight away without having to wait in line for a long time.
This works very well and so we walk the endless corridors through the museums until we finally find ourselves in the chapel room of the Sistine Chapel. Crowded and stuffy, and instead of looking and marveling, people are constantly bubbling and so come the constant admonitions:
Silence!
Well, what can I say? My daughter is far too honest, because I wanted to trick a tour group and cut straight into St. Peter's Basilica , but she doesn't want to. So we trudge back through the whole museum and around the outside back to St. Peter's Basilica and then we stand there in St. Peter's Square and look at the long queue. I've had enough for today, it's hot as hell and I don't feel well. I want to go home.
