On June 9, 2022, we set off for Venice!
On the route from the Dolomites to Venice, we avoid toll roads again and pass through many small beautiful Italian towns, past mountains and turquoise lakes. This route also takes us through the region of Veneto, known for its Prosecco. During a spontaneous Prosecco tasting on-site, we can try different varieties and decide to take two of them with us.
The selected campsite, "Venezia Village," is a 10-minute bus ride from the Venice train station. Perfect for strolling through the streets of Venice and getting a first impression on the same evening. We are delighted by the narrow streets, numerous bridges, beautiful canals, and countless restaurants. It makes the selection not so easy! In the end, we end up in a beautiful green courtyard and enjoy the first authentic Italian pizza of the road trip.
The next day starts with a leisurely breakfast, and then we set off again into the city. Still without a precise plan, we follow the signs to the Rialto Bridge and towards Piazza San Marco. With the beautiful weather, there are significantly more tourists this time than the day before. So it's difficult to find a good spot for photos on the famous Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal. So we better move on quickly until we suddenly find ourselves in St. Mark's Square and don't know where to look first. The Basilica di San Marco, the Doge's Palace, and the Mark's Tower - we should have informed ourselves beforehand how long it would take to visit all of this... Unfortunately, we only have time for the Basilica and the tower. But both were definitely worth it! The Basilica with its impressive floors and breathtaking mosaics covering every square inch and the Mark's Tower with its wonderful view of the city. But now our feet are hurting a lot from all the walking... so we treat ourselves to an Aperol Spritz and some Cicchetti (small tapas). It seems like there won't be time for the Biennale today. In the alleys, we come across a few random artworks, but we will have to let the complete abundance of the Biennale take effect another time and simply come back ;) We end the evening with a glass of wine, mussels, and pasta at Campo Santa Margherita.
Since there are too many tourists in the city for our liking, the next day we pack up our tents and retreat to the sea in search of more relaxation (the Garda Lake from our original route will have to wait for another vacation).
Beach, please!
