Our first destination was the small town of La Fortuna at the foot of the youngest and most active volcano in Costa Rica - 'Arenal'.
Due to its high activity - Arenal grows several meters each year, as lava regularly accumulates around the crater or flows down the slope - unfortunately, climbing the volcano is not allowed.
However, we were able to bathe in the countless hot springs around the volcano and hike in the surrounding densely populated national park. Here we saw our first sloth - unfortunately, very high up in the tree. It was more like a ball of fur - as seen in the picture. But later on, we had much more luck! :-)
Since it was quite cloudy, we only saw the volcano once for about 10 minutes in 3 days, despite its close proximity to the city :-D (See picture). The rest of the time, it was hidden in a sea of clouds.
Nevertheless, we had a great time in La Fortuna and met some nice people in our hostel with whom we enjoyed evenings together, relaxing with 1 or 2 Imperials (the Costa Rican beer - very tasty!) and planning our further route.
