The Bay of Islands, with its 144 islands, is a paradise for all kinds of water sports. When I entered this seemingly endless bay coming from the north, I was amazed. Everywhere small islands in the shimmering light blue water. I wanted to try something new: a kayak tour through the bay. In the early afternoon, I arrived in the bay and went to the information center for the first time to find out about the possibilities of my idea. There were some guided tours, but this afternoon the weather was getting a bit worse and I wanted to rent a kayak for about 4 hours so that I could visit some islands. Therefore, as recommended by the lady at the information center, I continued along the beach and visited a local kayak rental shop. I made an appointment with them to rent a kayak for 4 hours the next morning. They also recommended that I bring snorkelling equipment, as there is a great coral reef on a small island just outside the bay, which is easy to reach even for absolute beginners.
After this pleasant conversation, I looked for the local campsite, which is about 5 kilometers behind Paihia. I spent the afternoon with a wonderful coastal walk, which led from the campsite past some lonely bays with golden sandy beaches back to the town of Paihia.
Tomorrow I am really looking forward to the kayak tour and snorkeling in the coral reef.
