Shortly after 4:00 am we were wide awake 😅 9 hours time difference really had an effect somehow🤷🏼♀️
So we didn't waste any time, got ready, and by 6 o'clock we were right on time for the opening of Safeway. Here we first bought the essentials before heading back to the hotel. Relaxed breakfast in bed, and then we were off. Since we were too early for our trip to Alcatraz, I casually mentioned the famous photo point in our street 😇 Note, our hotel is located pretty much at the bottom of Lombard Street😅 Jörg's exact words were "well, let's go, we have time." And so we walked all the way up the beautiful Lombard Street, as the famous curves were on the other, descending side of the hill. Our calves are like Popeye's forearms today😅
From there, we went to see the sea lions and seals at Pier 39 and then continued to Pier 33 where the boat to Alcatraz was waiting for us. It was a short, windy crossing accompanied by Karl the fog.
Alcatraz, no words. Always amazing. We opted for an audio guide tour of the cell block, which was very interesting and informative. After that, we strolled around the island on our own. If you're ever in SF, check it out. However, the tickets are in high demand and we had already ordered ours online in advance from home. At this point, I would like to thank my mom for giving them to me as a birthday present😘
Back on the mainland, we returned to Pier 39. A small snack at Wipeout, observing people, and strolling along the entire pier.
Memo to Ingo, SF fridge magnet✅️ 😉
Karl had finally disappeared (that's really what they call their fog), so we decided to see what the view is like from Coit Tower. So it was back to working out our calves and up the hill again 😅
And how lucky we were, the elevator was out of order. What are 234 steps anyway?🤷🏼♀️ We were full of enthusiasm until the 6th floor, but from the 8th it got a bit tough before we had to pull ourselves up to the 13th floor with all our strength, clinging to the railing🤣 But☝🏼, we did it💪🏼 And the view was definitely worth it😄 The descent was relatively quick. Once we reached the bottom, I checked out the famous Greenwich Steps. An endlessly long staircase that leads from pretty far down to Coit Tower. Not such a great idea after climbing the tower, because I was already up there, but well, let's leave it at that. I saw them and walked a good stretch of them from top to bottom and back up. Short break, a super steep street downhill and as luck would have it, on the other side uphill again to continue to China Town. We walked all the way through to the Dragon Gate, one more street over, short break at the, hold on, Chinese 😅 before we started our march back to the hotel. Once we arrived here, according to my watch, we had completed exactly 28,800 steps and 76 floors 😅 I would say that's enough for today😆
