Quite a tall order to fit into the headline that we did Seattle today. The fact is, we drove from the Olympic Peninsula to Mt. Rainier today and took the wrong turn. Suddenly we found ourselves at a ferry to Seattle. And that was a stroke of luck because the ride to Seattle turned out to be the highlight of today.
Driving slowly towards the city with that spiky needle and seeing the skyline of Seattle was quite an experience.
Taking in the sea air one more time, watching the waves, and hoping to see whales and dolphins one last time was very nice.
However, we skipped Seattle itself. We drove directly through the typical American canyon of high-rise buildings and quickly moved on to have lunch at a small Chinese restaurant, and then went on a long shopping spree for the next four days in the wilderness.
A wonderful panoramic drive to Mount Rainier National Park, interrupted only by a few photo stops, followed.
Unfortunately, the Elkview Lodge that was highly recommended and booked on Airbnb turned out to be a run-down cabin. Sure, we already knew that the accommodation would be simpler than the past three nights, but it was still a disappointment when we walked in. We are all curious about how the beds smell...
Unfortunately, we can't cancel it and now have to endure four days here. But we are optimistic because we won't do anything here except eat and sleep. The rest of the time, we want to spend in the national park. And dinner on the porch was already very nice.
The mosquitoes here know very well that the nature of Canada is beautiful. Let's see if we will see moose and bears tomorrow and not just count mosquito bites!
