Mexico - In the footsteps of the Maya

بڵاوکراوەتەوە: 08.12.2017

After our somewhat bumpy flight from Hamburg via Düsseldorf to Cancun, we took the transfer from the airport to Playa del Carmen. Our selected hotel was about a 2-minute walk from the pedestrian zone in Playa del Carmen and a perfect starting point for our first exploration tour. As true coastal kids, our first destination was the sea. Strolling through the warm and turquoise water, taking the first memory photos for our families back home, and taking a little first stroll through the coastal town. After the first night, we set off on a round trip. From the first moment of vacation planning, it was clear to us: we are following in the footsteps of the Maya. Climbing pyramids, getting to know small towns, and getting an impression of the Mexicans and their way of life. From Playa del Carmen, we went to the most famous point of the trip, the Maya pyramids of Chichen Itza. Through our great tour guide and the first stories of Mexican history, we started thinking about the way of life of the Maya. From Chichen Itza, our journey continued to Merida. A small modern town that has left an impression on us with a visit to the market, a little stroll, and a visit to the park. From Merida, we went on a day trip to the mangroves of Rio Lagartos. During a speedboat tour between magnificent green plants and bright green water, we were able to observe pelicans, flamingos, and crocodiles. After another overnight stay in Merida, the round trip continued to Izamal. A tour of the Franciscan monastery and a little break for tea in the shade, we continued to our accommodation for the night. A converted, very spacious hacienda, with small cabins and an evening with live music and dinner in the group, was the perfect conclusion to the impressive day. We continued toward the coast, via Uxmal to Coba. The Mayan pyramids are located here amidst dense jungle, and the view from the pyramid over the green treetops is more than impressive. The final stop on our journey was Tulum. As the only Mayan city located directly by the sea, it offers a great view and a tour of the site is worth it! You will capture some well-known photo motifs. Our journey through Yucatan came to an end by bus. After all the beautiful, impressive but also exhausting days, it was time for a little relaxation and beach time. We stayed in Tulum for another 9 days. Simply unwind, enjoy the beach and sun, go on a snorkeling trip with rays, colorful fish, and with a bit of luck, one or two turtles. The return flight to Hamburg was difficult for us, going from summer back to the cold North German winter. But after looking through our vacation photos, it was clear! Mexico was definitely worth the trip.
