Summer holidays

Gipatik: 19.01.2020

Hello from Henryville!

I finally have some time to tell you a little bit about what's been going on. We had summer holidays from early December to mid-January, during which we didn't just sit at home, but traveled through South Africa for a total of 5 weeks!

There were so many exciting things that I'll list my personal highlights from this unforgettable vacation below :)

Our second stop was in Lesotho (the country that's right in the middle of South Africa), where we slept in huts. On our second day there, we went on a 4-hour horseback riding tour, which was quite challenging. The horses had to carry us over rocky hills - uphill and downhill.

My second highlight was Coffee Bay on the coast. We stayed in a beautiful hostel right by the sea, met other volunteers there, AND took our first surfing lesson! Standing on the board is not as easy as it looks, but it was still fun!

After two stops, we were in Jeffreys Bay, where we spent Christmas Eve. And to celebrate the day, we went out for burgers in the evening :D It was a bit strange not to spend the day with family, but it was alright! There was a really nice surfer village where I bought myself a Christmas gift hihi...

Then we were already on the famous Garden Route. In Tsitsikamma, we went on a kayaking tour on the Storms River. First through the waves to the sea and then on the river. Sharks and rays swam underneath us. In the middle, we also jumped from cliffs into the river water. It was truly an impressive experience!

Over New Year's Eve, we were in Cape Town and met several other volunteers. Cape Town is really diverse! Of course, we hiked up Table Mountain and had a breathtaking view of Cape Town and the Indian Ocean. I had muscle soreness from the hiking for another 4 days...

The day after, we visited my beloved penguins. They are super cute, waddling along and hatching their eggs.

After Cape Town, the three of us went to the Cederberg, where we saw an elephant rock and Bushman Paintings, for example.

A few days later, we went home. I would have liked to spend a few more days by the sea, but I was also looking forward to seeing my other roommates and our house!

And now we've already been working for 3 days. It's been chaotic because there are many new children in the kindergarten and both the teachers and children are overwhelmed. So it happened that some of the children were in a different group without anyone noticing directly :D but it's getting better and I can quickly learn the names of the children, which is slowly ending the chaos.

That's it. Have a great day! :)
