Morning: Over hills and through fields
After the turbulent journey, we took a two-hour nap at our hotel in Nyaung Shwe. At 9 o'clock in the morning, we started our tour of the area around Inle Lake. With a local guide, we hiked for about 3 hours through rice fields, forests, and small villages. We accompanied children on their way to school, observed the diverse fauna and flora, and visited a small farm where an old woman roasted rice crackers over an open fire.
The walk brought back the much-needed calm and relaxation after the adventurous car ride, and was a wonderful contrast to the chaotic and noisy day in Mandalay.
Afternoon: Book and beer at the Asiatico Pub
After lunch at one of the many restaurants in Nyaung Shwe, we strolled around the village. Nyaung Shwe is located directly on a canal and is the gateway to Inle Lake. With its numerous boat docks, it is the perfect starting point for exploring Inle Lake and its many highlights. More about that on Day 4.
We spent the rest of the afternoon in a pub, enjoying local beer and devoting our attention to a book. Even with a packed travel itinerary, there must be room for relaxation.
