Auckland (New Zealand Part 1)

Апублікавана: 16.12.2018

After our flight from Brisbane landed in Auckland in the afternoon, we picked up our camper van and set off to explore New Zealand. However, we didn't go too far at first, but stayed in Auckland to see the city.

The next morning, we first went to the Auckland Museum, which we wanted to use as an introduction to the history and culture of New Zealand and the Maori.

A large exhibition hall provided information about the Maori culture and the arrival of the British settlers. After the settlement seemed to go peacefully at first with a treaty, bloody conflicts arose because the two parties had different understandings of its exact meaning.

In the natural history exhibition, we saw some extinct species and those that we hoped to encounter during our stay here.

Just like in Australia, the floor about the wars could not be missing, where the fallen ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) soldiers were honored.

After so much information, we strolled through Auckland Domain, a large park that was eagerly used for cricket games. We didn't immediately understand the rules while watching, as it seemed to be a chaotic mess where you have to knock something down with the ball.

Then we visited the greenhouses of the 'Wintergardens' before continuing towards the city center. Auckland's main street, Queen Street, seemed unimpressive for the country's grand street.

However, we admired the partially huge Christmas decorations, which were colorful and blinking here as well. Some Santa Clauses were also walking through the streets and were ready for photos - together with lightly dressed young women, whose role in the Christmas story was not quite clear to us.

After enjoying a large ice cream in summery temperatures, we headed towards the harbor and took the train back to our campsite.

Before leaving the next morning, we went to a Baptist church for the worship service, as it was right around the corner. Singing Christmas carols on a warm summer day was a bit strange. Afterwards, we were invited for tea and coffee and received some travel tips along the way. A couple even invited us to celebrate Christmas with them when we are in the area again...
