The three towers of Paine (Torres del Paine) rise vertically towards the sky. Almost 2000m high, they dominate the probably most famous national park in Patagonia.
We won't miss this highlight near Puerto Natales. On the first day, we joined a guided tour that visited the most beautiful places in the park, which covers an area of about 1800 km2, on a full day trip. Some backpackers spend up to 10 days here with tent and camping equipment, but we were not prepared for that. We started by bus and spent a wonderful day in perfect weather, benefiting from legendary panoramic views.
On the second day, we set off on our own with our hiking backpacks. In four hours, we hiked up to the Base Torres del Paine. Behind a lake, you get a sensational view of the towers.
Patagonia is famous for its strong winds that can quickly change the weather. Up to four seasons can occur in one day. And we experienced them all! Sun and heat, wind and cold, rain and sun, snow. We had it all. We constantly put on and took off sweaters, gloves, and rain pants. A snowstorm didn't make the steep ascent to the summit any easier, but we made it. Proud and exhausted, we reached the base only to find that the three towers were hidden by low-hanging, heavy clouds.
