To the Nordkapp over Christmas and New Year's Eve

Wɔatintim: 25.12.2023

Day 3+4 or roughing on 4 wheels and kilometers

After a short breakfast consisting of Nutella bread and tea, we cleared the camper and headed north on the E4.
It was Christmas Eve and normally you're lounging around at home or stressed out when your relatives come over for dinner later.
For us, there was something completely different on the agenda: finally doing the kilometers!
We drove 500 km that day.
Of course not without incident ;-).
The first incident occurred while cleaning the windshield and mirrors at a gas station.
I took the bucket of water and mop from the heated room and started cleaning the windows.
When the mirrors immediately froze (no wonder at -14°C), I had to scrape the ice away again. And suddenly I had part of the exterior mirror in my hand...
Luckily I was able to put it back on straight away.
The second incident occurred around 3 p.m.
The washer fluid system was frozen.
At -8°C everything worked, but at -14°C nothing came out when we pressed it, much to our dismay. Even though we had already filled in new concentrate.
The wildest speculations and suggestions were made about how we could thaw the mopping water again. On top of that, all the shops were already closed at that time and we looked stupid at first
The trick, which we didn't think of ourselves but which saved us, was very simple:
De-icing spray for windows which you can get in every store and luckily we had a bottle on board.
Simply squirt a little onto the frozen nozzles, activate the washer water and everything works again...
We then looked for a nice place and rang in Christmas Eve.
The food was very simple but very good considering the weather: pasta with Bolognese. A dream!
After we had eaten our fill, Santa Claus came and put lots of great presents under the tree for us.
We ended the evening comfortably with a few rounds of MauMau.
We started the next day with a short walk, which was very difficult due to the heavy snow, down to the frozen lake. However, we didn't dare go on the ice.
Back at the camper we prepared to leave and covered 400 miles on Christmas Day.
The sun was already setting at half past three and so we enjoyed coffee and cake in complete darkness at 3 p.m.
We drove for about 2 hours and parked ourselves in the parking lot at a sports hall, which was very brightly lit.
For dinner there was bread and whatever was in the fridge that had to be used up before it spoiled.
Tomorrow we start the last 280 km to Rovaniemi. Santa Claus lives here
The first stopover on our journey.
Good night.
