Tag 26 - Ponferrada nach Cacabelos

Ishicilelwe: 09.05.2024

Sleeping in was on the agenda today. I want to leave a little later because Anton came to Ponferrada yesterday due to illness, Viky only has a short journey to get here and Ryan is also coming by bus this morning to go to the hospital because he may have broken his shinbone or ankle. At 9:30am we meet in a café near the castle. I spontaneously decide to visit the castle again with the others because I really liked it yesterday and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again after a few days.
After the tour, Anton will take another break today because he doesn't feel well. Ryan will go to the hospital from here and Viky decides to go running with me.
My feet are not playing along at all today and the first few kilometers out of the city are painful for me. I take a break in the next town, eat a little something and then, when I finally get off the asphalt, my feet feel better again. What's interesting today is that all the churches along the way were closed. The house of God, which should always be open, is mostly closed. As it was already relatively late when I set off, I am of course now walking in the blazing midday sun. The thermometers read over 30 degrees in the shade. When I finally get through a short stretch of forest and out into the fields, I see my new surroundings. A wine-growing region. Vineyards and vines everywhere. Every now and then a tree provides shade, but mainly I walk on in the sun, kilometer after kilometer.
Ryan has now reported that his leg is not broken. Like me, he has suffered from severe over-exertion and the pain is similar to a fracture. He should take a complete break for two days and then carry on running.
When I arrived in Cacabelos, I asked in every hostel for a place to stay and actually only had to go to the fourth one. Afterwards I took a walk around the town and ate in a restaurant that a local had recommended to me on the way.
Tomorrow I will run a longer version to Trabadelo, which starts off 9km with a few small hills, then goes uphill for 10km, 500m in altitude to Pradela, and then runs back down the 500m in altitude in 2km, very steeply. It is basically the warm-up stage before the day after tomorrow I have to tackle a total of over 1000m in altitude towards O Cebreiro. That is why I will split the 38km from here into two, because my feet are not in top shape. But we will see what tomorrow brings and whether I can really manage it.
I am now on the last 200km to Santiago and I currently expect to arrive there around Saturday 18 May +/- one day.
