Day 72-74 - Dunedin & Co

Ishicilelwe: 13.01.2018

From Kaka Point, we head to Dunedin on Wednesday, with a stopover at Tunnel Beach. Dunedin is the oldest city in New Zealand and is said to be a trendy, young, and beautiful city, as it is home to one of the largest universities in the country, with many students living here. It's just too bad that it's summer vacation right now. Starting from the central hub, the Octagon, we visit the numerous magnificent buildings in the historicist style. But you can also find street art on every corner in the industrial and harbor district. Chic designer shops and cool cafes line up one after another. It reminds me a little of Berlin.

We take on the steepest street in the world (35%, 19.3°), as well as the Chinese Garden and various galleries. Not to forget: coffee houses :)

Not far from here is the Otago Peninsula with the 'Royal Albatross Colony', the sea lions, and the blue penguins. But because of the relatively high prices and the fact that we have already seen some animals and hopefully will see others without a tour guide, we content ourselves with the view of the landscape.

Next stop on the journey is Oamaru, a town that became wealthy through the invention of frozen meat, as evidenced by the many beautiful buildings that still stand today. A somewhat curious form of art, steampunk, has also become big here.

In between, we quickly made a 'jump' over the Moeraki Boulders and off we go!

100 kilometers further north, we once again lie in wait, this time hoping to see the blue penguins. Unfortunately, there is no photo evidence because the cute little penguins don't tolerate flash and they took a pretty long time to come home. It was Saturday night after all ;)

Now we are almost at the end of the New Zealand tour, and the rest of the coming week is dedicated to getting rid of all the things we recently painstakingly put together.

On Thursday, we will fly to Auckland and from there, on Friday, we will take off to Sydney and write the final short chapter.
