Island: green, vast nature & sheep everywhere!

Ishicilelwe: 03.08.2018

That's how you could summarize our impressions of Iceland in as few words as possible.

During the two days we were in Iceland, we made full use of the rental car!

Each day included a road trip. For both days, it meant getting up early, dressing warmly, having breakfast, and then hopping in the car to drive around for hours! But of course, we always had a destination in mind.

The first excursion followed a well-known tourist route called the 'Golden Circle'.

Along this route were various natural attractions such as the Kerid crater, a waterfall called 'Gulfoss', and the geysers. But it wasn't just these 'main attractions' that were important, but rather the unique nature along the way.

Giant rocks, vast meadows, and free-roaming sheep shape the surroundings.

So, it's important to keep your eyes open to not miss any 'photo-worthy' spots, and to try to capture the beauty of nature in many snapshots. As we quickly noticed, this is not always possible because reality is often much more impressive than a mere image.

Exhausted from the impressions and the drive (nearly 250km in total), we look forward to our dinner and our bed.

With many images in our minds and the anticipation of the next road trip, we quickly fall asleep, only to start the next day just like the previous one.

Today, the destination of our drive is the black beach in the southernmost and rainiest community called 'Vik'.

Even on this drive, we become more and more fascinated by the nature and the island.

After nearly 3 hours of driving, we arrive at our first destination. The impressive beach of Vík with its black sand and the rock in the sea. From here, we begin our return journey towards Reykjavik, with various stops planned along the way.

So, we also see other sections of the beach in the south, catch a glimpse of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (however you pronounce it) that erupted in 2010, and the Selfoss waterfall.

Back in the apartment, it's time to slowly say goodbye to this beautiful piece of Earth... sadly.

Packing our backpack again to leave the apartment the next morning.

We spend the last hours before departure in the city of Reykjavik, visiting sights and strolling (despite the freezing cold) through the beautiful streets to get a final impression of the city. What strikes us is that it is a very very small town with a lot of charm for a capital city!

That also matches our impression of the rest of the island. Hardly a person in sight and hence very peaceful and harmonious!

With these thoughts about the island, we now have to say goodbye as the plane takes off towards North America!

Goodbye Iceland, we had a wonderful time!
