Tag 2.1: Westward Ho! - Clovelly

已发表: 20.06.2019

After a nice evening in a beautiful restaurant yesterday, we started off comfortably this morning. Clovelly was already visible as a white spot on the steep coast, as well as Hartland Point with its lighthouse as the 'last point' of the coast. The weather was perfect today, sunny 16° - perfect hiking weather... :-)

But as 'harmless' as the path was at the beginning, there were suddenly steeper ascents and descents, so we were very glad to have our walking sticks. When the path briefly ran along the pebble beach, we had the idea to shorten the mountains and simply continue walking along the beach. ;-) Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that this also has its pitfalls, because we were not really fast and it was also strenuous. The longer we walked there, the more doubts arose: would we not be faster on the path? And where exactly will we meet the path again? Finally, there was a section with a sandy beach - a relief for walking - and there we also discovered footprints. Exciting - we follow them! And in the end, we were able to find the path at the spot we suspected from a distance. Now we appreciate our path again. After a while, we reached Peppercombe, a small settlement. From there, it went uphill again, this time in a forest. We also discovered a runner there who wants to participate in a race that starts tomorrow: 24 hours to cover the Westward Ho! - Bude route, it takes us 4 days - incredible!!! Once we reached the bottom again, we arrived at Bucks Mills, where we had an ice cream. :-) The question slowly arose: how far is it actually still... But the last section, Hobby Drive, seemed to stretch endlessly. In the book it said 18km, we have already done that long ago?!? After what felt like an eternity and 21.2km, we finally arrived in the picturesque Clovelly!
