I'm not the bravest when it comes to heights. But there was one thing I really wanted to try: climbing over the bridge. You can do that in Sydney or in Brisbane. I chose Brisbane and bravely booked a climbing tour over the Story Bridge. I scheduled the appointment for my last day in Brisbane. So I still had some time ;)
But the day came and I set off towards the bridge. From my quarters I took the CityCat (a kind of liner) to the city center and then I walked through the entire city. Past huge high-rise buildings where you have to tilt your head back to see the whole building.
As I crossed the Story Bridge on the footpath, the thought immediately occurred to me: What have I done? It's really very high!!! But there was no going back - backing out doesn't apply.
Equipped with a suit, a belt with fastening hooks and safety straps on the glasses, you were not allowed to take anything else with you, not even your watch. You then reached just below the bridge via a staircase and were then hooked into a rope with a hook - off we went. Relaxed with a guide in front, up the stairs of the bridge (where the upper lights are in the picture) to the highest point of the bridge - 80m above the water. The strap and the hook made me feel very safe and my little fear of heights was gone.
After the climb we went back down to half of the bridge and then across the road and back up to the highest point. I had booked the tour for 4 p.m. and since it lasts about 2 hours, I still saw the beginning of the sunset on the bridge. The nice guide took photos, which you could of course buy for a "small" sum - but you probably only do something like that once :).
