But Hoi An has so much more to offer, which is why we were glad to spend four days here.
Located roughly in the middle of Vietnam, Hoi An is also the halfway point of our planned eight-week trip through Vietnam. Compared to our last stop, Quy Nhon, Hoi An is bursting at the seams with tourists. This frightened us during our first stroll through the old town. But by the second morning, when we set out early to explore the sights, we were convinced of its appeal. Hoi An's old town ensemble is rightfully listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The over 200-year-old houses are largely preserved, with some beautifully restored, allowing you to imagine the vibrant life of the Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese traders who brought importance to this place.Today, the houses are only used for tourism. Pubs, cafes, clothes, souvenirs. But it's still fun to stroll around, even in the evenings. We also liked the nice mixture of tourists. In addition to Asian tour groups, there are also groups from all countries, families, and backpackers in large numbers. Hoi An apparently is a "must-see" in every travel plan. And if you go two streets outside the old town, you'll find many cozy pubs and sometimes pleasantly low prices.We used one day for a diving trip to the Cham Islands. The underwater visibility wasn't great, and the number of fish was startlingly low. But we were amazed by the variety of corals, and the organization was very good. Today, we visited My Son.
