We are at the end...

Atejade: 07.08.2018

A cozy breakfast with one of our breakfast ladies gave us a nice start to the day.

Afterwards, we set off for our last day here in St. Petersburg, fresh and in good spirits. Today, the Anna Akhmatova Museum was on the agenda.

We were guided through a beautifully designed exhibition. In her former residence, it tells the impressive story of a strong woman and one of the most important writers and poets of the first half of the last century. With interactive elements, visitors are taken through the apartment where this woman spent a significant part of her life with the family of her second husband, the art historian Nikolai Punin. The exhibition provides a clear and vivid account of this woman's life and losses. Her husband and only son Lev were arrested multiple times and never returned home after the fourth arrest. This exhibition impressed us a lot and showed us a different side of how people lived and suffered under the Stalin regime. Papa and I both believe that this woman deserves special honor and attention because she was portrayed to us so strongly and vividly. She must have suffered a lot, yet never stopped believing in the good and always continued to write. Even when her poems were no longer printed, she found ways to publish them in samizdat (self-publishing).

The house of Anna Akhmatova is also the headquarters of the 'Memorial' society. As mentioned in a previous article, this society is responsible for processing and enlightening the time of the former Soviet Union. It particularly touched us that this museum is visited a lot. In the beautifully landscaped park, which belongs to the house, we sat in the sun and talked about this woman's life...

There was classical culture at the end. We took a close look at the Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect. Amidst bustling tourism, with Russian art and live music, we let ourselves drift and finally had tea in a small café in a side street off Nevsky.

The backpacks are now packed, mainly with impressions and great experiences. In a nice restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, we ended our last evening here, winding down from our very beautiful trip.
