A Morning in the Township

Atejade: 20.04.2021

Before continuing the next day, I had the opportunity to visit the township of Knysna with a guide.

The founder of the tour has taken in children from alcohol- and drug-dependent families and all the proceeds go to support the local people.

I only took this one picture here because, on one hand, I wanted to experience these two hours without constantly thinking about the next possible subject, and on the other hand, I wanted to show respect to the people.

I can only recommend this kind of tour to every traveler in South Africa because, in addition to providing a lot of information about life, everyday life, infrastructure, and the challenges in such a place - and there are townships like this throughout the country - this time makes you realize how unjust the world can be and how grateful we should be for our own lives.

And what fascinated me the most was once again how happy these people are. They have a much harder life, but they exude so much more joy than we do in Germany. Dancing, singing, and laughing are part of everyday life here, and this is probably why I feel so comfortable here.

And since it is so fitting, here are three more things that I found fascinating on the road trip:

- before you start, everyone - even the taxi driver - gives you tips and recommendations on how to behave so that you can come back safely

- there are country roads where you can drive straight for 150 km without any traffic lights or roundabouts

- if you are driving slower than the vehicle behind you on a single-lane road, you move, if possible, to the side of the road so that the other vehicle can pass, and then there is a 'Thank you' with the hazard lights and a 'Please' with the headlights

-> I also felt very comfortable and safe on the road during the entire tour
