It is the number 1 excursion destination when visiting Trieste: the Castello di Miramare. The castle was built between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
It is only 5 km from Trieste and can be reached by bus. However, it still requires a short walk. This leads along a beach promenade that we found a little strange. This is because many older people sunbathe here, basically on the concrete path. Access to the sea and thus to the cool water is only possible by ladder. I would find lying there extremely uncomfortable.
After a while, the view opens up to the Castello di Miramare. Entry is free, only the tour of the house requires a ticket. It is a beautiful complex. But it certainly only gained a little extra splendor because the well-known Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, or Sissi for short, liked to stay here. She is said to have spent 14 extended visits here. The location certainly played a role. Trieste is on the sea and when Sissi came by ship, she had a nice place to stop. She could then travel on to Vienna by train.
Personally, I liked the Castello di Duino a little better. We visited it as part of a short hike on the Rilke hiking trail and I described it here:

I also recommend my main article on Trieste:

Either way, both castles are further reasons to visit Trieste.
