Once around Fehmarn

Atejade: 25.06.2024

Let's start again with the weather. Today pure summer, sun from start to finish, but not too warm with a maximum of 23°C. That's how it can stay (but most likely won't).

Actually, I was looking forward to driving over the Fehmarnsund Bridge today. I did this on my very first major bike tour a whopping 51 years ago, back then with a 28-inch touring bike without gears and front wheel caliper brake, no comparison to today. But this morning, we were informed by our hotel owner that the bridge is closed to bicycles and a free bus shuttle has been set up. I had read about this at some point, but thought it was a thing of the past. Tough luck. We had to hurry a bit to catch the bus at 9 a.m., otherwise we would have had to wait an hour and a half. Despite the bus stop being poorly marked or not marked at all, we managed to make it in time. Upon arriving in Fehmarn, we had to make the next decision: turn left or right. We then decided to go left, which resulted in us facing massive headwinds on the most beautiful stretch on the north side. Unfortunately, the wind had turned to the east. With a change in our direction initially to the south and later to the west, it naturally became much better. We came back with the shuttle bus and then it was only 3 km back to our accommodation. Overall, we covered over 80 km again on this day.
