Airboat ride through the Everglades

Atejade: 17.07.2016

After breakfast, our rental car was ready for pick-up. It turned out to be slightly larger than expected. Instead of a midsize car, we received a Jeep Compass.

We immediately hit the road, leaving Miami Beach and heading straight for the Everglades.

On the way there, the extent of the Pokemon GO hype became clear once again:

no words...
no words...

During the approximately 1 3/4 hour drive on the straight road, the driver with automatic transmission and cruise control felt almost unnecessary.

When we arrived in Everglades City, we got our tickets for the Grassland combo at Captain Jack's, which included two airboat rides and gator hugs. The first hour-long tour with Captain Tony took us through the mangroves, the forested area that is completely underwater in the summer and can only be navigated by airboats in a labyrinth of waterways.

The second half-hour tour took us through the grassland. It is also completely flooded, but looks more like a large grassy area with bushes.

On both tours, we were able to see several alligators, some of which were only inches away from the boat.

Afterward, we were even able to hold a baby gator in our hands.

Definitely a successful day with lots of speed, action, information, nature, and great photos.
