ICT Hiumaa Saaremaa

Atejade: 14.06.2019

Friday, June 14th:

109 km, 40 of which are like in northern Finland - nothing but road!

In the morning we will soon be in Kärdla, the largest town on Hiumaa. It is all easily manageable.

From Kärdla we drive north to Cape Tehnika. There is a big lighthouse there, which we climb right away. Unfortunately, the visibility is pretty bad today. There is a monument on the beach that commemorates the victims of the ferry accident with the ferry Estonia in 1994.

Only a few kilometers away is Kõrgessaare, but we can't even find a café there. So we continue without refreshments on the monotonous 40 km to the ferry port of Soru. Although we are only a few hundred meters from the coast, we can't see anything because of the dense forest. During the Soviet occupation, this was all a restricted area.

In the evening the ferry takes us to the larger neighboring island of Saaremaa.

Saturday, June 15th:

After 90 kilometers we reach Kihelkonna, where we stay in the rectory. Part of it has been converted into a B&B and in the beautiful rectory garden you can enjoy Saaremaa and the sun. Two other guests invite us to a concert in the community hall. One plays the piano, the other sings Italian songs. 'Dolce Vita' is the name of their program, which unfortunately attracts only 15 people.

We had a wonderful day along the coast of the island of Saaremaa in bright sunshine. After 20 kilometers, we stopped for a mustard tasting. Some Dortmund residents have fulfilled a dream and produce mustard for Estonia in the idyll of the island. Of course, there is a large BVB flag hanging next to the entrance.

From the cliffs of Panga we enjoy the view of the calm Baltic Sea. From time to time we also pass stone beaches, but they are not really inviting for swimming. At the Pidula manor we treated ourselves to coffee and cake and then easily managed the remaining 30 km to Kihelkonna.
