Island-hopping in North Frisia // Day 6 // Island change the 2nd time: Off to Amrum

Atejade: 11.06.2019

FAHR FAREWELL TO FÖHR
After yesterday's absolutely sunny day, it's hard to believe. But the view out the window is ominous: gray, wet, windy! But there's no bad weather, just wrong clothes! Therefore, the way to the ferry terminal is braved on foot despite the bad weather. The beach has its own charm, at least it's deserted:

Goodbye, Föhr!
Goodbye, Föhr!

Even out on the pier - always being careful not to be blown into the sea by the stiff breeze and gusts:

TRANSFERRING TO AMRUM
I was a bit queasy about the ferry crossing. Bad memories come up again: boat to Heligoland, rocking, rocking, feeling sick, rocking...but all the excitement was for nothing! The ferry debris smoothly made its way from Föhr to Amrum in just 1.5 hours. There was quite a commotion on board! You can tell that the main season is slowly starting. And some people have so much luggage! On the other hand, I'm just fine with a backpack - in this vacation, I was glad more than once that I didn't bring a suitcase.

It was very convenient that the bus was already waiting when we got off the ferry. It was raining heavily by then. Yes, they also have an island bus here. It only goes one way, once an hour. Much easier to understand than the strange system on Föhr. And then we drove from the bottom (Wittdün) to the top (Norddorf) in just 20 minutes. Amrum is really small! Only 20.5 kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide.

QUICKLY TO THE BEACH
As an (by now) island pro, the first thing to do here is to inspect the beach. Making your way through the dunes:

And then it lies in front of you - the never-ending sandy beach (again, nothing going on here, everyone must be indoors drinking East Frisian tea):

ALONG THE MUDFLATS TO NEBEL
After successfully unloading the luggage, the hike along the mudflats to Nebel started. That's not a weather condition - it's another larger place on Amrum, alongside Wittdün and Norddorf. But 'large' is all relative here, because there's nothing really big here.

According to some people, Nebel is THE most beautiful village in North Frisia. In any case, it's quaint and cozy, with many pretty thatched-roof houses. But Keitum on Sylt was also great. And Föhr also has picturesque villages to offer. I don't want to be picky! But since we haven't mentioned cake in a while: The Friesen Café in Nebel has a very excellent apple crumble ;-)!

Everywhere on Amrum and also on the way from Norddorf to Nebel you can see birds, birds, birds, pheasants, geese, birds...they're also busy nesting (see bottom right) and every passerby is greeted and beeped at with all their heart, so they don't get any ideas about attacking the eggs - the most sacred thing:

Just before Nebel, THE jetty - I have no idea how I managed to capture it so deserted. Everywhere on Amrum is empty, yes, but normally not there, because all island tourists walk along THE jetty and take pictures:

BEST FISH DINNER
The accommodation - the old inn, 'Ual Öömrang Wiartshüs' - in Nebel is very rustic. And: The restaurant offers excellent fish! I had cod with asparagus. Anyway, my fish consumption has exponentially increased in the last few days - but if not here, then where else.

AND TOMORROW...

The smallest 'of my' three islands needs to be explored further. And the best way to do that is with...an e-bike, yay ;-)!
