Half term in the Special School

Atejade: 03.03.2018

Hello everyone. I haven't written for a while now, partly because there aren't many new stories in everyday life at school. I would like to use this small update mainly for new photos.

At the school, it has been half term since last Tuesday, which means the children are at home with their families for a week. Unfortunately, not all of them were picked up, but over 90%. I myself took the opportunity to get to know Eldoret a bit better and also visit a home for street children.

The lack of resources at the school has been brought to my attention in several conversations with different teachers. However, I have also observed teachers who come up with something new every day. For example, we made bubble bubbles out of soapy water together with the children. This is supposed to help with vocal training.

In general, it can be said that Kenya recently introduced a new curriculum for special schools. This curriculum is now even more similar to the German curriculum and is based on competencies. Individual support plans are now supposed to be created for each child in every subject. Since many teachers are still somewhat overwhelmed by this, as they have never learned it this way, our school invited special education teachers from the surrounding area to a workshop on Friday. The presenters explained the new curriculum very well, and I also had the opportunity to participate. For many of the teachers, this is initially 'a lot' of work, but they are glad to know how to deal with the new situation.

The trip to the Kakamega Forest unfortunately did not work out, as we left too late due to a car breakdown. We could only observe a few baboons during the drive-by. I hope we still manage to visit the forest.

But regardless of that, another volunteer and I have already planned a trip to Masai Mara for next week.

See you soon,

Andi
