We traveled to Campeche from San Cristobal. Since it was a total travel time of about 16 hours, we split the trip into 2 days and stayed in Palenque in between.
There is not much to see in Campeche itself. It is a pretty colonial town. There used to be a continuous wall around the city center, but now only remnants and 7 out of 8 bastions remain, which can be visited.
Outside the city is the Campeche Archeological Museum & Fort San Miguel. If you come to Campeche as part of a cruise and have not seen other Maya museums or Spanish forts, the visit is quite nice. For us, it was quite boring, as we have already seen much more impressive forts and the museum is not particularly outstanding in its presentation.
We then walked back to the city center along the sea from the fort, which was nice. For a change, it was finally warm here and it was quite enjoyable to stroll around the city and the sea.
