Mexico #3 - Tulum

Tulum

Besides Cancun, Tulum is the second major tourist center on the Riviera Maya. Tulum's Mayan site, located directly on the coast with its own beach, is particularly well-known.

Dana had booked us into a hostel here that serves free Caipirinhas for an hour in the evenings. This way, we met many other travelers and shared stories.

To beat the package tourists, we set off early on the first day with bicycles to explore the Tulum Mayan site. We spent the rest of the day with our bikes on the beach.

Akumal

A day trip to Akumal was planned for the next day. In a long bay, you have a very good chance of snorkeling with sea turtles here. To save our budget, we tried our luck on our own instead of booking a tour.

And indeed - after a long search, we discovered several green sea turtles. Although they were significantly smaller than the turtles in Cozumel, we were able to swim with them in shallow water for an hour.

That evening, there was a karaoke night at our hostel. Especially when we unknowingly performed the hostel owner's favorite Spanish song and were invited for free drinks afterwards, it was an unforgettable night.

Interim conclusion Riviera Maya

Only two hours by car separate Cancun and Tulum. Everything we have experienced so far has taken place with small detours along this route. No wonder tourists love the Mayan coast for its high density of attractions.

We consider it fortunate to travel in the off-season. We don't even want to imagine how it would be in the high season at many places that are currently well visited. We have not yet experienced the rainy season and have not had a rainy day. The only problem in some places are mosquitoes.

All in all, we are very impressed with Mexico so far and are excited to see what the next destinations in the less touristy inland have in store.

Saludos!
