Zanzibar is mainly known for its incredibly beautiful beaches.
One of the most beautiful beaches is Nungwi beach in the north, which you can also see in the photo. A beach so white that it almost blinds you and bright blue, clear water that invites you to swim. However, we don't like to swim so much. We prefer to walk along the beach and explore the area.
At the hotel beaches, you will often be offered trips to Nungwi beach. We decided against these trips and had Ali Baba, who more or less ruled the beach of our hotel, organize a taxi for us, which took us there in about 40 minutes and later back to the hotel. We didn't want a completely organized excursion, but rather to explore the beach on our own. And that was definitely the right decision.
On the one hand, because we could watch the sun slowly sink behind the sea and set the sky on fire...
On the other hand, because we could discover unique things and places.
Most tourists spend their time at the front section of the beach, where they swim in the sea and then return to the hotel. But the further we moved away from the 'main beach', the more interesting it became. Almost all of our pictures were taken off the beaten path.
Definitely take the time to explore Nungwi at your leisure!
Just for your information: some vendors on the beach may offer you a picture with a monkey for money. However, the monkeys are mistreated and captured. That's why, to not support this mistreatment, you should refrain from taking a picture with the monkeys.
