02/05/2023 Seulo (Sardinia)

פֿאַרעפֿנטלעכט: 06.05.2023

The night it rained, the sky is gray, so today we will linger a little longer on the mattress. One special feature of our small vacation rental is that we received a voucher for 3 Italian breakfasts, which we can redeem at the local bar. For that, we each get a cappuccino and a pastry of our choice. The cappuccino is amazing, as it is brewed from an expensive-looking Italian coffee machine, probably with several bars of pressure. Marita tests her Italian skills by shopping for some groceries at the nearby Allimentari. In the afternoon, we take a scenic shopping trip to Isili on winding roads. In front of a bank, we strike up a conversation with a Sardinian who has worked in Germany for many years. The conversation is a cool mix of Italian, German, gestures, and facial expressions. It definitely makes a Google Translator conversation look poor. He is amazed that we made it to Seulo on our scooter through this rough pass. Then we head back and enjoy Frutti di Mare with spaghetti.

Insights on Day 2:

As a driver, if you recognize a pedestrian, you honk at them if you know them and wave. If you know them really well, like "Famiglia," then you honk twice and wave - you might even stop in the middle of the road and exchange news until other cars behind you honk too - not because they know anyone, but because they want to keep going. Through our numerous walks, we have become quite known in the village and have reached the first level of these greeting rules. Drivers greet us with a smile and a wave - but no honking. Somehow, we already feel like a part of the village - it creates a nice feeling.
