Lombok - Kuta

פֿאַרעפֿנטלעכט: 06.09.2018

Then we finally went to the south of Lombok to Kuta to go surfing.

Our accommodation was a small oasis surrounded by simple farms and fields.

From now on, surfing was on the agenda every morning. The morning washing machines in the waves (of which there were many) at least woke you up. As a reward after the strenuous surfing, there was always a fresh coconut on the beach.

Our surf beach, Tanjung Aan.

Then we continued out into the waves with the small boat and the surfboards.

(Yes, surfing is really exhausting, that's why we look like that 😂)

But you get back all the love the waves take from you from the animals on the beach.

You can imagine who would have taken everyone with us 😉

The days at the beach with our surf instructors and all the other great people we met here were definitely among the best days of our trip.

(don't worry, he deserved it 😁)

After surfing, we usually relaxed at home by the pool.

And in the afternoon/evening, we went to town with the scooters.

Indonesian-style refueling.

We also tried wakeboarding.

Besides these many fun moments, we also experienced a very superstitious and confused world of Indonesia. In one of our first nights here in Lombok, after the 2 strong earthquakes in the north, there was another strong earthquake (the strongest for the south). Together, we all ran out onto the street into the open and, well, what can I say, it was shaking quite a bit. But the unpleasant thing was actually the immediate power outage. It was pitch black and of course, in the rush, you didn't have a flashlight or your phone in your hand. To prevent fires caused by short circuits due to the earthquakes (poorly laid cables), the island's power was shut off for the entire night. What followed was a somewhat disturbing night outdoors.

But it wasn't the earthquake at night and the many small earthquakes in the following days that were the scary part. Rather, it was the locals, who, against all logic, panicked again and again, shouted 'tsunami', and immediately drove to the nearest hill. It must be said that at no time was there even a remotely real tsunami threat. It was simply the belief in punishment by the gods and the ignorance of the population. After that, the city was somewhat deserted. According to belief, the gods of the north and south were fighting each other, leading to the earthquakes. There was also apparently a severe tsunami 40 years ago on a Sunday (just like all the earthquakes of the last few weeks were on a Sunday), on August 26th. In addition, a local resident claims to have discovered handprints of the spirits on house walls. Well, all of this led to the feeling that the whole village spent the night on the hill next Sunday, August 26th, during the full moon. Long story short, nothing happened.

Typical environment here in Lombok

There are cows, chickens, and dogs everywhere...

Chili cultivation

Tobacco cultivation

Typical fruit stand

Water buffalos and monkeys are also typical road users 😁

Finally, some surfing impressions...

However, these were still our first few days with the big boards.

Getting better...
