The small fishing village of Santa Luzia is just a stone's throw away from Tavira and is perfect for a relaxing half-day trip. Since our travel group usually doesn't have much more than half a day without a tight schedule, this place was perfect for us today. Here, the main activity is catching octopus, which the local restaurants then prepare fresh and delicious for consumption. In the early morning, when the fishermen return with their catch, there is usually a lot of activity in the village's harbor. However, when we arrived, it was very sleepy...
The squid is still caught in a traditional way. Clay vessels are lowered to the seabed into which the animals swim, but unfortunately can no longer find their way out. It is interesting that the method has hardly changed over time. You can still see the lined up clay vessels on the fishing boats.
We found the many tiled facades in the narrow streets to be particularly worth seeing, which emphasized the charm of this little village once again.
It will probably not come as a surprise that at the end of our walk through Santa Luzia, we also tried a taste of the specialty of this place. Perfectly grilled, with a dash of fine olive oil, garlic and some coriander, and served with young potatoes, it was there... the octopus... or at least some parts of it.
Good cuisine can be so deceptively simple! We love it!
In this spirit, we'll lick our fingers once again and politely say good night! ;-)
