This morning we arrive in Kristiansund. Here we take a day trip to the Kvernes Stave Church, and then return to Kristiansund via the Atlantic Road....Kristiansund is a port city and island municipality connected by bridges in the northern part of the Norwegian county of More og Romsdal....The stave church was first mentioned in a document in 1432, but is likely much older. It was originally a single-nave hall church with a choir the same width as the ship, but was heavily rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1633, a choir and sacristy were added in log construction. At the same time, a baptismal chapel, likely made from materials from the previous church, was built on the west side of the church and an additional exterior cladding was added. One noticeable feature of the current church is the external diagonal supports. The exact date of their construction is unknown....The Atlantic Road was originally proposed as a railway line in the 20th century, but this was abandoned. Serious planning for the road began in the 1970s and construction began on August 1, 1983. The construction site was hit by 12 storms. The road was opened on July 7, 1989 and cost 122 million Norwegian kroner. Tolls were meant to be collected for 15 years, but by June 1999, the toll had been paid off and removed. The Atlantic Road, which spans eight bridges from island to island, is 8.3 kilometers long and runs from Karvag to Vevang.
