After a turbulent journey, we had a turbulent week. On Wednesday evening, we had to urgently take a foal to the vet due to an infection. We took it back to the ranch and Tanya went to check on it in the middle of the night. The foal was much better, and another mare lay down to give birth just when Tanya was in the stable. Luckily, she saw right away that the foal was coming out head first instead of feet first. She tried to solve the problem, but when it didn't work, she called the vet and went to the clinic at 3 a.m. with Robert. They managed to save the foal, but it couldn't stretch its front legs, so we had to milk the mare and feed the foal.
Unfortunately, things didn't go well. On Friday, we had to put the mare down because she had internal injuries. Later, we had to put the foal down as well. It seemed like it had lost all will to live as soon as we put the mother to sleep. In addition, it still couldn't stretch its legs, so it couldn't stand up and became weaker and weaker.
We had to continue giving antibiotics to the other foal with the infection to get rid of it.
On Saturday, we caught up on some work that had been left over from the past few days. Sunday was a cozy day. Tanya and Robert's two daughters came with their children for a Mother's Day brunch. In the afternoon, Tanya, her daughter Kelly, and I went to Cold Lake and bought flowers for Kelly's balcony. In the evening, we had delicious steaks for dinner before bringing the mare, who gave birth in the morning, back to the stable and calling it a day.
