Kalbarri - here we come

9.11.2002

It is about 400 km to Kalbarri. We are probably expecting our most beautiful accommodation so far on this journey. We are excited!

Kalbarri is a pretty place at the mouth loop of the Murchison River into the ocean, which lives from tourism. We have planned a visit to various areas of the Kalbarri National Park.

The landscape during the drive is already well known to us and therefore not worth mentioning again. Further south there are more and more wildflowers. Whole areas are blooming in pink, yellow and white between delicate green. We have to stop again and again to take pictures. Simply wonderful!

Murchison River

From Meanarra Hill, a lookout point shortly before reaching the city, we have a first view of the Murchison River, the town and the bay.

In the early afternoon we arrive at our accommodation for two nights and are not disappointed. Our holiday apartment is large and modern furnished. It offers every comfort and we feel comfortable immediately.

As it is still early in the day, we go on an exploration tour along the coast. We drive to various lookouts, from which we have a fantastic view of the cliffs and the sea.

In the evening, we get some delicious freshly fried seafood including fries to take away at the "Jetty Seafood Jack" fish and chip shop, which we enjoy together with white wine in our nearby accommodation.

On the road in Kalbarri NP

We have big plans for today.

First we go to the pelican feeding. It takes place in the morning at the riverbank. It seems that the pelicans have an alarm clock, because they are already strolling around on the meadow and are in waiting position. It is amusing to see how they catch the fish with their long beak.

Afterwards we continue to Kalbarri National Park. It is one of the highlights of Western Australia. The Murchison River has carved a deep bed into the layers of rock here. The red-white-brown striped sandstone gorges are very impressive. Our first stop is the Natural Window. This rock window rises high above the Murchison River and everyone wants to be photographed in this spectacular backdrop. Of course we do too.

From the viewpoint Z Bend there is a great view of the Murchison River, which takes a U-shaped course here. From Hawks Head we also look again at the river with its colorful layers of rock.

Most of the viewpoints are quickly accessible on easy paths and everything is well signposted.

After a lunch break at our accommodation, we are on the road along the George Grey Drive by the sea in the afternoon. Short side roads lead to various viewpoints. Our first stop is the Natural Bridge - a sandstone arch carved out by wind and tides. Our sightseeing tour continues to Eagle George and Red Bluff, where there are always different impressions of the colorful cliffs. Mushroom Rock is a rock in the shape of a mushroom. We have to process the many impressions first.

It has been an exhausting but also wonderful day. In the evening we are quite tired.
