The village of Sexten in the Pustertal Valley is particularly known for its breathtaking hikes in the Dolomites, whether in summer or winter. Some of these beautiful hikes start at Kreuzbergpass, which is only a few kilometers away from the village of Sexten, such as the tour to the so-called Alpe Nemes. Here you can enjoy enchanting views of the Sextner Dolomites and Carnic Alps.
The Kreuzbergpass, located near the village of Sexten in the Hochpustertal Valley, is a mountain pass on the border between South Tyrol and Veneto.
With its height of 1,636 m, it forms the transition from the Dolomites to the Carnic Alps. This pass is particularly recognizable due to the small ski area located directly at the Papernkofel. From here, various tours start in the Carnic Alps, such as the tour to Alpe Nemes in Sexten. A typical destination for an afternoon excursion in the Hochpustertal Valley.
On the Pustertal Road, turn into Sextenertal at Innichen. From there, pass through the villages of Sexten in the Pustertal Valley and Moos, until you finally reach Kreuzbergpass. It takes about 15 minutes by car from the municipality of Sexten. If you're lucky enough, you can still find a parking space right at the starting point to start the hike to the 1,950 m high mountain hut. This tour is particularly popular, so it can sometimes be difficult to find an available spot.
The Alpe Nemes hut is one of the most beautiful mountain huts in the Carnic Alps. The difficulty level of this hike is moderate. It takes about 1- 1 1/2 hours to reach Alpe Nemes in Sexten. It goes slightly uphill and downhill repeatedly. If you want to sled on the way back, there is no choice but to walk a few steps. Arriving at the Alpe Nemes mountain hut, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Sextener Dolomites, the Sextener Sun Dial, and the Knieberg in the Carnic Alps. Before heading back home, you should try the homemade South Tyrolean dumplings here, they taste simply delicious. On the other hand, if you can't get enough of hiking in Sexten, I recommend a hike to the 2,504 m high Knieberg. You can reach the summit of the Carnic Alps in about 2 hours.
My conclusion:
Alpe Nemes is perfect for an excursion in the Sextenertal Valley. The hike is suitable for everyone and can be done in both summer and winter. The Alpe Nemes mountain hut is open all year round. On the other hand, if you want to see the highlight of the Sextener Dolomites, I recommend doing the Three Peaks hike, where mountain dreams really come true.
