We arrived in Macedonia late in the evening and were happy to quickly find an incredibly friendly, chic and inexpensive hotel room in Bitola. Following the advice of the reception, we visited the city the next day by walking through the city center to the main square (check), taking a look at the market (unfortunately closed), and, if feeling like walking, going all the way to the excavation site of Heraclea, built by Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) (which we did). And so, the next morning and afternoon were well planned and offered a nice initial impression of Macedonia, until we set off over the mountains towards Lake Ohrid.
